Camellias are the queen of ornamental shrubs. There are no other plants that have the variability in flowers, growth habits and bloom seasons that are exhibited by our beloved Camellias. Camellia blossoms are categorized according to form. But do you know what the correct name for each flower form is? Here is a list of the different types of camellia blossoms.
CAMELLIA FLOWER FORMS & SIZES
Single Form One layer of up to 8 petals, surrounding a central stamen cluster. Many sasanquas and species are this form.
Semi-double Two or more layers of 9 or more petals, again surrounding a central bunch of stamens
Formal Double: Many rows of regular petals, building up to the centre, and never showing stamens
Peony Form – Also called informal double. Many layers of irregular and waved petals
Anemone Form : One or more rows of large outer petals, lying flat or undulating, the centre a convex mass of petaloids and stamens.
Rose Form Double : Many layers of petals. The flower opens as a formal double, but when fully open shows stamens in the center.
