- Cold Tolerant Camellias
Cold Tolerant Camellias
Certain camellias have been observed to have more cold tolerance than others. In fact, many of the so-called cold tolerant varieties were actually bred to achieve this desired characteristic. Based on the limited climate information that is available and published, we categorize our varieties with a general description of climate zones suitable for each variety. In the future, with help from our many customers, we hope to provide much more specific cold tolerance information from specific locations. Limited trials of specific varieties in specific locations should provide the most accurate information.
We describe this characteristic as cold tolerance rather than the more widely used description of cold hardy. We have found that using the term cold hardy seems to give the wrong impression to many gardeners that specific varieties are hardy is certain areas regardless of the climate. That is simply not accurate. Many camellias will tolerate extreme conditions, but conditions within certain locations are not constant. Extreme fluctuations can result in death or damage to the plants. Also, there are different requirements for growing camellias in regions where extreme cold conditions can occur than in mild climates. We feel that describing this condition as tolerant rather than hardy gives a more accurate warning to the customer.
